Event Agency vs DMC vs PCO in Korea: Which One Do You Actually Need?
Event agencies, DMCs and PCOs do different work. What each owns, which fits your event type, and the Korea-specific question to ask whichever you choose.
Event Agency vs DMC vs PCO in Korea: Which One Do You Actually Need?
Three different kinds of company will answer your enquiry about running an event in Korea, and they do meaningfully different work. In short: an event agency creates and produces the event; a DMC handles ground logistics for people visiting; a PCO organizes the machinery of a large conference. Choosing the wrong one is the most common early mistake foreign companies make.
Event agency
What they do: concept and creative, venue selection, stage and production design, run-of-show, vendor management, and on-site operation. They own the outcome of the event itself.
Best for: product launches, brand events, corporate conferences, investor roadshows, partner summits, award nights — anything where the experience is the point.
What to check: comparable projects at your size and format, the named project manager, and whether they can contract in Korean for you.
DMC (Destination Management Company)
What they do: ground handling for visitors — airport transfers, hotel blocks, transport, tours, restaurant bookings, sometimes team activities. They are specialists in moving and hosting people in a destination.
Best for: incentive trips, delegation visits, and the travel layer around a conference.
What to check: their transport and hotel contracts, and multilingual guide capacity.
Where confusion starts: many DMCs will also organize a dinner or a small ceremony, and many event agencies will arrange transport. The question is where the depth is — ask which part is their core business.
PCO (Professional Congress Organizer)
What they do: the operational machinery of large conferences and academic congresses — registration systems, abstract handling, speaker management, sponsor and exhibitor sales, badge printing, secretariat functions.
Best for: academic congresses, association annual meetings, government-linked international conferences, medical and scientific events — typically with hundreds or thousands of delegates, paid registration and an exhibition floor.
What to check: experience with your association type, registration platform, and sponsorship sales track record.
A quick comparison
| Event agency | DMC | PCO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owns | The event experience | The visitor journey | Conference operations |
| Typical client | Corporate / brand | Incentive, delegation | Association, academia, government |
| Strong at | Creative, production, on-site show | Transport, hotels, tours | Registration, abstracts, sponsors |
| Weak spot | Large-scale registration machinery | Creative production | Brand creative |
Which do you need?
- Launching a product, hosting a brand event, running an investor roadshow → event agency
- Bringing 60 employees for an incentive trip → DMC, possibly with an agency for the gala night
- Running an academic congress with abstracts, 800 delegates and an exhibition → PCO
- A corporate conference with international guests flying in → event agency, often with a DMC handling the travel layer
The combination matters more than the label. For a mid-size corporate event, one agency that also coordinates ground logistics is usually simpler than managing three vendors.
One Korea-specific note
Whichever you choose, confirm who contracts and coordinates in Korean. Venues and vendors in Korea quote, contract and communicate in Korean; front-of-house English is common but the back office is not. For a foreign client, this is often the single most valuable thing your partner does — and it is worth asking about explicitly rather than assuming. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an event agency and a DMC? An event agency creates and produces the event itself — concept, venue, production, on-site delivery. A DMC handles ground logistics for visitors — transfers, hotels, transport, tours. For a product launch you want an agency; for an incentive trip you want a DMC.
What does a PCO do that an event agency doesn't? A PCO runs conference machinery at scale: registration systems, abstract submission and review, speaker and sponsor management, exhibition sales, secretariat. Agencies rarely operate that infrastructure; PCOs rarely lead brand creative.
Can one company do all three? Some larger firms cover more than one, and for a mid-size corporate event a single agency coordinating the travel layer is usually simpler. Ask where their depth actually is rather than trusting the capability list.
Which do I need for a corporate conference in Seoul with overseas guests? An event agency for the event itself, frequently paired with a DMC for transfers and hotels. If it is an academic congress with paid registration and abstracts, a PCO instead.
